"This place could be in Sydney - It's buzzing"
The Short Bytes Film Festival crew
The above shots were taken at the Short Bytes Film Festival Late in 2001. The festival was headed by Sophie at the Murwillumbah Tafe College as a showcase for the work of the film students. The 300 people who packed the Regent Cinema on the night were highly impressed by the creative energy of our budding filmakers. This film festival became the inspiration for many related events.
We love to kids enjoying themselves - the best way to do this is to have a party at the cinema. Phone us to book for your next party - no groups are too small or too large. The best part is - it's free!
Dean Jeffreys fielding questions on his new documentery 'Shamans Of The Amazon'
After the screening. the discussion continued for two hours.
A rare opportunity to meet the filmmaker and hear first-hand and highly detailed accounts of his experiences.
Dean Jeffreys is a local filmmaker who spent years living with, and filming the people in the Amazon. The above pictures were taken on the premiere screening of 'Shamans Of The Amazon' which screened at the Regent late 2001. We plan tp continue screening films by local filmmakers, giving them the chance to speak at some depth on their experiences and insights.
The cinema is constantly evolving, so most of these shots show us as we were in the recent past. We have many exciting plans to make the Regent into the cultural 'hub' of the Tweed Valley, and Queensland border region. The cinema - restaurant is only the start of a vibrant entertainment - leisure complex. We will eventually host regualar 'Local filmmakers nights' plus local bands, dance, theatre, seminars and music recitals, as well as arthouse, family & quality mainstream films.
The Margaret Peate School of Dance staged a fundraising event in the cinema foyer. The girls from the dance school needed the money tp pay for the Christmas pagent, and staged a pre-pagent night in the cinema for families, friends and local people. The evening included snacks & refreshments in the foyer as well as the feature film for the evening after the dance performance. The cinema is open to any groups interested in raising funds.

At the Regent we lean towards quality mainstream, with some arthouse, and regular family/kids films (especially at the weekend). We bring 3 - 4 titles per week to Murwillumbah, and continue to repeat popular films. We are especially keen to provide a platform for local (regional) filmmakers, and will work to make this a regular feature.
The biggest screen in Northern NSW. The 300 seat auditorium has the perfect atmosphere to enjoy your next film. There's even bean bags if you fancy lying down.
Built in 1947 (When they knew how to build a real theatre) , The Regent has charm and an atmosphere that could never be experienced in a multiplex. Going to the cinema CAN be a personal experience when you enjoy a film in a real Australian country cinema.
